Amid the ruin of Jerusalem the slain are gathered and carried away, the grief of Lamentations over the young and old who lie in the streets (Lamentations 2). A gouache study by the French painter James Tissot.

French painter who, after a vision experience in 1885, devoted the rest of his career to an extensive illustrated New Testament based on travel through the Holy Land. His watercolors are now held at the Brooklyn Museum.
