The Golden Calf

While Moses is on the mountain the people cast a golden calf, the rebellion he recalls when he tells how he ground it to powder (Deuteronomy 9). A gouache study by the French painter James Tissot.

French painter who, after a vision experience in 1885, devoted the rest of his career to an extensive illustrated New Testament based on travel through the Holy Land. His watercolors are now held at the Brooklyn Museum.
