The Sabbath-Breaker Stoned

A man found gathering wood on the Sabbath is brought before Moses, and at the Lord's command the assembly leads him outside the camp to be stoned (Numbers 15). A gouache on board by the French painter James Tissot.

French painter who, after a vision experience in 1885, devoted the rest of his career to an extensive illustrated New Testament based on travel through the Holy Land. His watercolors are now held at the Brooklyn Museum.
