Believers have an anointing from the Holy One that grants them true knowledge.

What Does 1 John 2:20 Mean?

In contrast to those who fell away, John assures his readers: ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things. They have received an anointing, a gift that grounds them in the truth.

This anointing, given by the Spirit, equips believers to know and hold the truth about Christ. They are not at the mercy of every deceiver, for they have been taught by God Himself. John writes to strengthen confidence, not to flatter. Those who belong to the Holy One have within them a sure guide, enabling them to discern truth from error and to stand firm.

In the Original Language

chrisma (χρῖσμα), 'unction' -- an anointing, here the Spirit's gift that teaches and confirms believers in truth.
