The promise Christ has given is eternal life.

What Does 1 John 2:25 Mean?

John names the great promise attached to abiding in the Son and the Father: eternal life. This is what Christ has promised to those who hold fast to Him.

Eternal life is not merely endless existence but the very life of God shared with us, begun now and brought to fullness hereafter. It is promised, sure because it rests on Christ's own word. To remain in Him is to possess this life already and to await its consummation. John lifts his readers' eyes to the hope that crowns their faith, the eternal life Christ Himself has pledged.

In the Original Language

epaggelia (ἐπαγγελία), 'promise' -- a pledge or assurance, here the promise of eternal life given by Christ.
