John has written these things to guard his readers against those who would lead them astray.

What Does 1 John 2:26 Mean?

John states the immediate purpose of his warnings: he has written concerning those who seek to seduce them, to lead them astray from the truth. His words are a shield against deception.

Love sometimes takes the form of warning. John is not content to leave his readers exposed to those who would draw them away from Christ. He writes plainly so they will recognize and resist the deceivers. This is pastoral care: not only feeding the flock but guarding it. John wants his readers protected, alert to error, and held safe in the truth they have received.

In the Original Language

planao (πλανάω), 'to seduce' -- to lead astray or cause to wander, the work of the deceivers John warns against.
