Love is made complete in us, giving boldness for the day of judgment, for as Christ is, so are we in this world.

What Does 1 John 4:17 Mean?

John shows a fruit of perfected love: boldness in the day of judgment. Love is made complete in us so that we may have confidence then, because as He is, so are we in this world.

The maturing of God's love in us prepares us for the day of judgment, replacing dread with confidence. Already in this world we are being conformed to Christ, sharing His standing before the Father. Because we belong to Him and bear His likeness, we need not fear that day. John lifts his readers toward a love so complete that it casts out the fear of judgment, grounding their confidence in their union with Christ Himself.
