Believers are to put away malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander.

What Does 1 Peter 2:1 Mean?

Peter names the things that poison community, the quiet sins that fracture love between people: ill will, deceit, pretense, envy, and harmful words. Each one corrodes the fervent love he just commanded.

The image is of taking off soiled clothing. These are not faults to manage but garments to lay aside, things that have no place on a people born anew. Peter lists them plainly because they hide so easily under a respectable surface. Before he speaks of growth, he asks his readers to strip away what would rot it from within.

In the Original Language

dolos (δόλος), 'guile' -- cunning deceit, the bait that lures and traps another.
