Having turned to God, they now wait for His risen Son, Jesus, who rescues His people from the coming judgment.

What Does 1 Thessalonians 1:10 Mean?

Their conversion has a forward look. Having turned to serve God, they now 'wait for his Son from heaven.' Paul names Him plainly: Jesus, whom the Father 'raised from the dead.' The resurrection is the ground of everything, the proof that the One they await is alive and will surely come. And He is the deliverer, the one 'which delivered us from the wrath to come.'

The Christian life leans toward the future. These believers serve in the present while watching the horizon, expecting the return of the risen Lord. Their hope is not vague optimism but a Person, Jesus, who has already conquered death and who shields His people from the judgment that sin deserves. To wait for Him is not idle; it shapes how they live now. The whole posture of faith is captured here: turned to God, serving Him, and looking up, confident that the Son who saved them will come for them.

In the Original Language

orge (ὀργή), 'wrath' -- settled righteous anger against evil, here the coming judgment from which Jesus rescues His people.
