The gospel reached them not as mere words but with power, the Holy Spirit, and deep conviction, confirmed by the lives of those who preached it.

What Does 1 Thessalonians 1:5 Mean?

Paul explains how he knows they are chosen: the gospel arrived among them with unmistakable force. It came 'not in word only.' The same message that can sound like empty talk landed instead with power, accompanied by the Holy Ghost and producing deep 'assurance,' a full inner certainty. And the messengers' own conduct matched the message; their lives backed up their words.

The gospel is words, but it is never only words. A message about the living Christ carries the life of the Spirit, who presses the truth into the heart until it becomes conviction. Paul also points to integrity: 'what manner of men we were among you.' He did not preach one thing and live another. When the Spirit works through a faithful messenger, the result is not mere agreement but a settled, life-changing assurance that this is true.

In the Original Language

plerophoria (πληροφορία), 'assurance' -- full conviction, a being-carried-to-the-brim with certainty.
