News of their steadfast faith comforted Paul in the midst of his own affliction and distress.

What Does 1 Thessalonians 3:7 Mean?

The good report did more than relieve Paul; it 'comforted' him in the middle of his own hardships, 'in all our affliction and distress.' Even as Paul himself was suffering, the news that the Thessalonians stood firm became a source of strength to him. Their faith ministered to him as surely as his ministry had once strengthened them.

There is a beautiful exchange here. The one who came to comfort is in turn comforted, and the comfort flows from the very people he had worried over. A church that holds fast under pressure becomes a gift to those who love it, lightening their own burdens. Paul's afflictions were not removed, but they were eased by the knowledge that his labor had borne lasting fruit. This is how the body of Christ works, each member's faithfulness strengthening the others. The Thessalonians could not have known that their simple steadfastness was reaching across the miles to encourage the very apostle who had taught them to stand.
