Their love already reaches believers throughout Macedonia, yet Paul urges them to let it grow still more.

What Does 1 Thessalonians 4:10 Mean?

Paul confirms that their love is real and far-reaching: 'ye do it toward all the brethren which are in all Macedonia,' not just within their own congregation but across the whole region. Their reputation for love, like their reputation for faith, had spread. Yet Paul still urges, 'that ye increase more and more.'

Even genuine love is never finished growing. Paul praises what they have and in the same breath calls them higher, for love by its nature seeks to abound. He does not let a compliment become a stopping place. There is always another believer to embrace, another act of kindness to offer, another degree of warmth to reach. This pattern runs through the whole letter, faith increasing, love increasing, the walk abounding more and more. The Christian life is not a fixed quantity to be maintained but a living thing meant to grow. Paul lovingly refuses to let his children settle, urging their already wide love to widen further still.
