Each believer should learn to govern his own body in holiness and honor.

What Does 1 Thessalonians 4:4 Mean?

Paul makes the call personal: 'every one of you' must learn this. Each is to 'possess his vessel in sanctification and honour.' The 'vessel' is the body, and to 'possess' it is to master and govern it, holding it not in passion but in holiness and dignity. Self-control becomes an act of honoring what God has made.

There is a quiet nobility in this teaching. The body is not despised but honored, treated as a vessel worthy of holiness rather than a tool for appetite. To master oneself is no small skill; Paul says each one 'should know how,' implying it must be learned and practiced. Purity is not merely the absence of sin but the positive holding of one's body with reverence. This is sanctification reaching into the most personal places of life. Every believer is called to this dignity, governing the desires of the body so that the whole self, body included, is offered to God in honor.

In the Original Language

skeuos (σκεῦος), 'vessel' -- a container or instrument, here a reverent image for the body.
