What Does 1 Thessalonians 5:2 Mean?
Paul reminds them of what they 'know perfectly': 'the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.' The image is vivid and a little startling. A thief gives no warning; he comes at the hour no one expects. So the day of the Lord will arrive suddenly, catching the unprepared off guard.
This picture, which the Lord Himself had used, is not meant to frighten His people but to keep them watchful. A thief surprises those who are asleep and careless, not those who are awake and ready. The point is not fear but vigilance. Because the timing is hidden and the coming sudden, the only wise response is to live always prepared, as the next verses will urge. For the watchful, the unexpectedness of that day holds no terror. The warning of the thief in the night is finally a call to stay awake, to live each day as people who could meet their Lord at any moment.
