But they are not in darkness, so that day will not surprise them like a thief.

What Does 1 Thessalonians 5:4 Mean?

Paul turns from the heedless world to his readers with a strong 'But ye.' They 'are not in darkness,' not living in the spiritual blindness that leaves people unprepared. Therefore 'that day' will not 'overtake you as a thief.' For those who walk in the light, the Lord's coming is not a dreaded ambush but a longed-for hope.

Here the thief image is gently reversed. The day surprises only those asleep in darkness; it does not catch off guard those who are awake and watching. Paul reassures his people that they belong to the light, and so the very day that brings terror to the careless brings joy to them. This is the comfort of readiness. Believers need not fear the coming of the Lord, because they are not strangers to Him or to His day. They live as children of light, expecting Him, and so His arrival, whenever it comes, will be a welcome dawn rather than a thief in the night.
