What Does 1 Timothy 2:11 Mean?

In a setting where many women had little formal teaching, Paul affirms that they are to learn. This itself was a dignity, an invitation into the truth.

'In silence with all subjection' describes the posture of a humble learner, attentive and teachable. The emphasis falls on receiving instruction with a quiet and orderly spirit, the same readiness any disciple owes to sound teaching.

In the Original Language

hesuchia (ἡσυχία), 'silence' -- quietness and calm, a settled and peaceable manner.
