What Does 2 John 1:2 Mean?
The elder explains why his love is so steadfast: it is 'for the truth's sake.' This truth is not an idea kept at arm's length but something that 'dwelleth in us' — it has taken up residence within the believing community, making its home in their hearts and shaping how they live.
More than that, this truth 'shall be with us for ever.' What unites these Christians is not a fleeting agreement but an abiding reality that outlasts every change and even death itself. For the reader, this is quiet assurance: the truth of Christ that lives in you now is not on loan for a season. It is a permanent gift, and the love it produces shares in that permanence.
In the Original Language
menō (μένω), 'dwelleth' — to abide or remain, a favorite word of John's for a settled, lasting presence rather than a brief stay.
