Love is defined as walking according to God's commandments, the same path heard from the very beginning.

What Does 2 John 1:6 Mean?

The elder now defines the love he has urged. Love is not left as a vague feeling but given shape: 'that we walk after his commandments.' Love and obedience are not rivals here; to love is to live the way God directs. He then circles back, naming this very obedience as 'the commandment' they have heard 'from the beginning.'

The repeated image of walking ties love to the whole course of a life. Real love proves itself in action, in faithful daily steps along God's path. For the reader, this guards love from becoming mere words. To say we love God and one another, and then to walk according to His commands, is to let love become something visible, lived, and true.
