What Does 2 John 1:7 Mean?
Here the letter sounds a warning. 'Many deceivers' have gone out into the world, and the elder marks their defining error: they 'confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh.' They will not acknowledge that the Son of God truly took on real human life. To deny this, the elder says plainly, is the mark of 'a deceiver and an antichrist.'
This warning explains the urgency of the letter's call to love rooted in truth. Love that abandons the truth about Christ is no longer Christian love. The reader is steadied here: at the center of the faith stands the real coming of Jesus in genuine flesh and blood. To hold fast to that confession is to be guarded against every teaching that would hollow out the gospel.
In the Original Language
antichristos (ἀντίχριστος), 'antichrist' — one set against or in place of Christ, here defined by denying His coming in the flesh.
