Even amid that judgment, God rescued righteous Lot, who was distressed by the wicked conduct around him.

What Does 2 Peter 2:7 Mean?

Peter pairs the judgment of Sodom with another rescue: God "delivered just Lot." Living among that corruption, Lot was "vexed with the filthy conversation" — the unrestrained, lawless behavior — of the wicked around him. The word "vexed" means worn down, deeply distressed. Lot was righteous, and the surrounding evil grieved his soul.

Once again the pattern holds: when judgment falls, God knows how to rescue the righteous. Lot was no perfect man, yet Scripture calls him "just," and God brought him out. Notice that Lot did not grow comfortable in the corruption; it wore on him daily. This is itself a mark of a righteous heart — sin in the surrounding world distresses rather than delights it. Peter offers this to believers feeling besieged by an ungodly culture: your grief over evil is not weakness, and the God who saw Lot sees you. He delivers those who, though living among the wicked, refuse to make peace with their ways.
