Paul prays that the Lord would guide the believers' hearts into the love of God and into the steadfast endurance of Christ.

What Does 2 Thessalonians 3:5 Mean?

Before turning to instruction, Paul breathes another short prayer: "the Lord direct your hearts." He asks the Lord to guide their inmost being toward two things, "the love of God" and "the patient waiting for Christ." Hearts left to themselves drift; Paul asks the Lord to steer theirs toward what matters most.

The two destinations are beautifully paired. "The love of God" may mean both God's love for us and our love for Him, and the heart fixed there is steadied at its center. "The patient waiting for Christ," or the endurance of Christ, points the heart forward to His coming and supplies the patience to keep going until then. Love anchors the heart; patient hope sustains it. This brief prayer is a fitting bridge in the letter, for a heart filled with God's love and set on Christ's return is exactly the heart that can receive the practical exhortations Paul is about to give.
