Paul tells Timothy painfully that many believers in Asia have deserted him, naming Phygellus and Hermogenes among them.

What Does 2 Timothy 1:15 Mean?

Paul acknowledges a bitter reality: many in the province of Asia have turned away from him, and he names two by name. As his imprisonment made friendship costly, support fell away.

This is one of the loneliest moments in Paul's writings, and he does not hide it. Faithfulness can be a lonely road; even a great apostle knew the sting of being abandoned by those he had served. Yet he records it plainly, without bitterness overtaking him. The honesty here comforts any reader who has felt deserted in hard times. Paul's example shows that loneliness need not become despair, for though people turn away, the Lord, as the next verses make clear, does not. Human loyalty may fail, but God remains.
