What Does 2 Timothy 1:18 Mean?
Paul caps his tribute with a prayer for the day of judgment, asking that Onesiphorus find mercy from the Lord then. He reminds Timothy that this man's service was well known, evidenced earlier in Ephesus too.
Paul's deepest wish for his friend is mercy in that day, when all stand before God. It is the kindest thing one can ask for another: not earthly reward but the Lord's mercy at the end. Onesiphorus had ministered in many ways, and Paul trusts such love is seen by God. For the reader, this verse points beyond the present to the great day ahead, and it shapes how we pray for those we love, longing above all that they find mercy in Christ when they meet Him face to face.
