Paul urges Timothy to fan into flame the gift of God placed in him when Paul laid hands on him.

What Does 2 Timothy 1:6 Mean?

Timothy had received a spiritual gift, set apart for ministry when Paul laid hands on him. Now Paul calls him to stir it up, to rekindle what may have grown dim under pressure and fear.

Gifts from God are not static possessions; they must be tended like a fire, fed and fanned lest they fade to embers. Timothy is reminded that the grace within him is real and given, but it asks for his active care. There is great encouragement here: God does not withdraw His gifts, but He invites us to keep them burning. For any believer grown weary or timid, the word is to return to the flame God kindled, to breathe on it again, and to let it blaze.

In the Original Language

anazopureo (ἀναζωπυρέω), 'stir up' -- to rekindle a fire into full flame, breathing life back into dying embers.
