Paul describes how such people prey on vulnerable households, leading astray those weighed down by sin and desire.

What Does 2 Timothy 3:6 Mean?

Paul exposes the methods of these counterfeit teachers. They slip quietly into households and prey on the vulnerable, taking captive those who are burdened with sins and pulled this way and that by various desires.

The picture is predatory: a creeping entry, a targeting of the weak and weighed-down. False teaching often works not by open confrontation but by manipulation of the susceptible. Those laden with sin and unsettled by competing desires are especially at risk, lacking the stability to resist. For the reader, this is a warning to take spiritual health seriously, for an unsettled, guilt-burdened heart is fertile ground for deception. It also calls the community to protect the vulnerable. The antidote is to be grounded in truth and unburdened by Christ, so that no smooth-talking deceiver can lead one captive.
