Though absent in body, Paul is present with them in spirit, glad to see their good order and the firmness of their faith in Christ.

What Does Colossians 2:5 Mean?

Even at a distance, Paul feels bound to this church. Absent in the flesh, he is nonetheless with you in the spirit -- his heart and attention fixed on them as if he stood among them.

And what he perceives gladdens him: their order and the stedfastness of their faith in Christ. The terms suggest a community arrayed in good formation and holding firm under pressure, like ranks that do not break. Paul rejoices not in their cleverness but in their solidity. This is both commendation and encouragement -- he affirms the stability they already have, strengthening their resolve to keep it. A church does not need its leader physically present to remain faithful; it needs faith firmly set on Christ. Paul's joy at their steadfastness is meant to make them treasure and guard it all the more.
