Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas send their greetings.

What Does Colossians 4:14 Mean?

Paul names two more companions in his closing greetings. Luke, the beloved physician -- a trusted friend and skilled healer who stayed near Paul -- sends his greeting to the church, warmly commended by that affectionate title.

Alongside him is Demas, mentioned simply, who also greets you. These names round out the circle of those laboring with Paul, reminding the Colossians of the company of believers who care for them. The mention of Luke especially carries warmth, a beloved friend whose loyalty Paul valued highly. For the Colossians, such greetings made the wider fellowship of the gospel feel personal and present. Even a brief list of names testifies that Christ's work is carried forward by real people bound together in love and labor. Paul's companions, near him in his bonds, reach out across the distance to greet a church they share with him in the Lord.
