Haggai 1:12

Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him, and the people did fear before the LORD.

Zerubbabel, Joshua, and all the remnant obey the voice of the LORD and the words of Haggai, and the people fear before the LORD.

What Does Haggai 1:12 Mean?

This is the turning point of the chapter. The leaders and the whole remnant respond—not with debate but with obedience. The verse carefully notes that they obeyed both ‘the voice of the LORD their God’ and ‘the words of Haggai the prophet,’ recognizing that God's message had truly come through His messenger. Their obedience is crowned by reverent fear before the Lord.

Genuine response to God's word is rare and beautiful, and here it is immediate. The people do not merely admire the message; they heed it and are moved to holy awe. True hearing always issues in doing and in reverence. This remnant models what the Lord seeks from every generation: hearts that recognize His voice in His word and bow before Him, ready to take up the work He sets before them.

In the Original Language

she'erith (שְׁאֵרִית), “remnant” — those who remained after exile; throughout Scripture the remnant is the surviving people through whom God preserves His purposes.
