Haggai, called the LORD's messenger, delivers the LORD's own message: ‘I am with you, saith the LORD.’

What Does Haggai 1:13 Mean?

The moment the people obey, God answers with a word of presence. Haggai is here given a striking title—‘the LORD's messenger’—and the content of his message is the briefest and richest of assurances: ‘I am with you.’ The promise comes precisely as the people turn to the work, sealing their obedience with God's nearness.

These four words are among the deepest comforts in all of Scripture, echoing God's pledge to Moses, to Joshua, and ultimately fulfilled in the One named Immanuel, ‘God with us.’ The Lord does not send His people to labor alone; He goes with them. To everyone who answers His call, this same promise stands. The work may be hard and the ruins discouraging, but the presence of God transforms every task. He is with us—that is enough.

In the Original Language

mal'akh (מַלְאַךְ), “messenger” — the same word rendered “angel” elsewhere; it means one sent bearing another's message.
