Isaiah 46 mocks the Babylonian gods Bel and Nebo, whose images must be carried on beasts, and contrasts them with the LORD who carries His own people.
What Does Isaiah 46:4 Mean?
Isaiah 46:4 promises that the God who made His people will keep carrying them all the way into old age. The surrounding verses paint a vivid contrast: the idols of Babylon are a burden that must be loaded onto weary animals, while the LORD is the one who carries His people. Israel does not bear its God; its God bears Israel -- from the womb described in verse three to the "hoar hairs" of advanced age.
The repetition is tender and emphatic: "I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you." Four times the LORD presses the point home, as if to leave no room for doubt. The same hands that formed His people sustain them through every stage of life, and the relationship does not weaken as strength fades. Where human helpers grow tired and false gods must be hauled about, the true God remains active, lifting and rescuing. This is a word of comfort for the aging, the worn, and the fearful: the One who began your life has pledged to carry it to the end. His commitment is not seasonal but lifelong, grounded in His character as Maker and Deliverer.
