What Does Joel 3:10 Mean?
God issues a striking command: beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruninghooks into spears. It is the reverse of the famous prophetic vision of peace, where weapons become farm tools. Here the nations are summoned to turn every implement of life into an implement of war, and even the weak are told to boast, I am strong. They are to throw all their strength into the coming conflict.
The irony is pointed. The nations are mustering their full might, yet it is precisely this gathered strength that will be brought low before God. The reversal of the peace-vision shows a world in rebellion, arming for a battle it cannot win. Beyond this hour of judgment, however, stands the hope that the day will come when swords truly are beaten into plowshares under the reign of God. The Lord who summons the nations to the valley is the same Lord who will at last bring everlasting peace to His people.
