As judgment falls, the sun and moon go dark and the stars withhold their light.

What Does Joel 3:15 Mean?

Once more the heavens respond to the day of the LORD. The sun and moon are darkened, and the stars withdraw their shining. The same cosmic signs announced earlier now accompany the judgment of the nations, marking the gravity of the hour. When God acts in such fullness, even the great lights seem to veil themselves before Him.

These darkened heavens, echoed throughout Scripture's visions of the last day, declare that the Creator is moving decisively within His creation. The dimming of sun, moon, and stars is a sign of the Maker's unrivaled majesty; all things give way before Him. For the nations under judgment it is a portent of dread, but the very next verse turns to comfort, for the same darkening sky over which God presides shelters a people who find in Him their hope and strength. The God who darkens the heavens is the refuge of all who are His.
