What Does Joel 3:17 Mean?
The fruit of all God's acts is knowledge of Himself: so shall ye know that I am the LORD your God dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain. God's presence among His people is the goal of judgment and deliverance alike. Jerusalem will be made holy, and no strangers, no hostile invaders, will pass through her again. The city is secured and set apart for God.
To dwell in the midst of His people has always been God's desire, and here it is promised in fullness. A holy city, free from threat, with God present in it, is a picture of restored fellowship and lasting peace. The longing for God to make His home with His people runs through all of Scripture and reaches its great fulfillment in the One who tabernacled among us and in the final vision of the holy city where God dwells with His own forever. Here the people are assured that their God will be present, and His presence is their security and their joy.
