God confronts Tyre, Sidon, and Philistia, warning that any wrong they repay Him will swiftly return upon their own heads.

What Does Joel 3:4 Mean?

God turns to address specific neighbors, Tyre, Sidon, and the coastlands of Philistia, who had harmed His people. He challenges them: do you think to repay Me for something, to settle a score? If so, He warns, their recompense will return swiftly and speedily upon their own heads. The wrong they aimed at God's people will rebound upon themselves.

Here is the principle that what is done in cruelty comes back around under God's justice. The nations imagined they were dealing only with a small and conquered people, but they were dealing with that people's God. To strike His own is to strike Him. The swift returning of recompense shows that God's justice is neither slow nor uncertain. This is sobering for any who oppress, and reassuring for any who suffer wrong: the Lord sees, the Lord remembers, and in His time He repays, defending those who belong to Him.
