What Does Joel 3:9 Mean?
The scene shifts to a summons of war. God calls for a proclamation among the nations: Prepare war, wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near. The nations are mustered, their warriors roused, and bidden to come up. It is an ironic call to arms, for they are being gathered not to victory but to the place of judgment.
There is a sober irony here. The nations imagine they march in their own strength to assert their power, but in truth they are being assembled by God to meet His justice. Human pride loves to prepare for war and trust in mighty men, yet all such gathering serves God's purposes in the end. The verse exposes the futility of opposing the Lord; even the assembling of armies happens under His hand. What the nations think is their hour of strength is in fact their summons to the valley of decision before the living God.
