What Does Jonah 1:17 Mean?

As Jonah sinks into the sea, the narrative reveals that the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow him. The word for prepared means God appointed or assigned it, the first of several things in the book that God will so prepare. What seems like the prophet's death becomes, by God's design, the place of his rescue. He remains in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

This is grace wearing a strange disguise. The fish is not punishment so much as preservation; the deep that should have drowned Jonah instead carries him in its keeping. Jesus Himself pointed to this verse, calling it the sign of the prophet Jonah and likening His own three days in the heart of the earth to Jonah's three days in the fish. So this ancient story reaches forward to the heart of the gospel. Where there seems to be only death, God is already preparing resurrection.

In the Original Language

manah (מָנָה), 'prepared' -- means to appoint or assign; God appoints the fish, the gourd, the worm, and the wind, showing all creation serving His purpose.
