The word of the LORD comes to Jonah again, giving the disobedient prophet a second commission.

What Does Jonah 3:1 Mean?

The book begins again with the very words that opened it, but now with two added words of grace: the second time. The word of the LORD comes to Jonah once more. The God who first commissioned a prophet who fled now returns to that same prophet with the same call. He does not cast Jonah aside for his failure but renews His word to him.

This is one of the most hopeful sentences in Scripture for anyone who has failed. God is the God of the second time, the One who comes again with His call after we have run from the first. Grace does not give up on us when we falter; it returns and offers the task afresh. Jonah does not have to earn this renewal; it comes to him as a gift, the same word he once refused now placed gently in his hands again. The Lord who calls is patient, and His mercies are new every morning.
