What Does Jude 1:14 Mean?

Jude appeals to Enoch, whom he calls the seventh from Adam, marking his place early in the line of the faithful. Jude says Enoch prophesied of these very men, declaring that the Lord comes with ten thousands of his saints, his holy ones, an immense company gathered for a great day. Jude reports the prophecy and lets it stand without explaining where it comes from.

The heart of the words is the certainty of the Lord's coming. From the earliest generations, the hope and warning have been the same: God will not leave wickedness unanswered forever. The Lord himself will come, and he will not come alone. For the ungodly this is a warning; for the faithful it is comfort, the promise that the One who keeps them will at last set all things right. Jude lifts the readers' eyes from present danger to that sure horizon.
