Those who stole the land will have no one to measure out a portion for them in the assembly of the Lord.

What Does Micah 2:5 Mean?

The image is of the measuring line once used to portion out the land by lot among the families of Israel. The oppressors will have no one to cast that cord for them; they forfeit their share in the congregation of the Lord.

To lose one's place in the dividing of the land was to lose one's standing among God's people. Those who grasped at more than their portion end with none at all. The verse is a solemn reminder that a place among the people of God is a gift to be cherished, not a possession to be seized through wrong.

In the Original Language

chevel (חֶבֶל), 'cord' -- the measuring line used to mark out and assign portions of land.
