The attacking army advances in red and scarlet, chariots flashing like fire, as the day of assault is prepared.

What Does Nahum 2:3 Mean?

Nahum paints the approaching army in vivid color. Shields are red and warriors clothed in scarlet, whether from dyed leather, polished metal catching the sun, or the grim foreshadowing of blood. The chariots gleam like flaming torches on the day they are made ready, and the spears, here pictured as fir or cypress shafts, are brandished and shaken. The poetry is fast and dazzling, conveying the overwhelming force bearing down on the city.

This is the day of his preparation, the appointed hour long announced now arriving in iron and flame. For Nineveh, which had inflicted such scenes on others, the terror it dealt out now turns toward its own gates. The vividness is not sensational for its own sake; it makes the reality of judgment unmistakable. Behind the human army stands the God who summons it, working His justice through the events of history. The same God who marshals armies against entrenched evil is the One who shelters the trusting, and the reader is meant to know on which side true safety lies.
