Thebes had boundless strength in Ethiopia, Egypt, and allied nations, yet all of it could not save her.

What Does Nahum 3:9 Mean?

The prophet recalls how strong Thebes had been. Ethiopia, the lands to the south often called Cush, and Egypt were her might, said to be without limit, and the peoples of Put and the Libyans stood among her helpers. Thebes was no isolated city but the center of a web of powerful allies and seemingly endless resources. By every human measure she should have endured. The catalog of her supporters underscores just how formidable she appeared.

And yet, as the next verse will say, she fell. The piling up of allies and strength only sharpens the lesson: even limitless human resources cannot guarantee survival when God's judgment comes. Nineveh, hearing this, is meant to see the futility of trusting in alliances and armies. No coalition is strong enough to overturn the purposes of the Almighty. Scripture repeatedly warns against leaning on the strength of nations rather than on the Lord. The fall of so well-defended a city as Thebes preaches that true help comes from God alone, and all other helpers, however many, are a broken reed when He withdraws His hand.
