Even if Edom soared like an eagle and nested among the stars, God says He would still bring her down.

What Does Obadiah 1:4 Mean?

God answers Edom's boast of verse 3 with stark imagery. The eagle builds where no predator can climb, and the stars are higher still, yet height is no obstacle to the One who made the heights. Wherever Edom might flee or fortify, the LORD declares He can reach and humble her.

The phrase saith the LORD seals the promise as certain. No elevation, literal or figurative, lifts a person beyond God's hand. For the reader this is both warning and comfort: the same God whom no height can escape is the God from whom no depth can separate the humble. Pride invites the descent; humility need not fear it.
