Whatever the motives, Paul rejoices that Christ is being preached, and resolves to keep rejoicing.

What Does Philippians 1:18 Mean?

Having described both the sincere and the self-serving preachers, Paul reaches a remarkable conclusion. What then? he asks, and answers that in every way, whether the motives are false or true, Christ is being proclaimed, and in that he rejoices and will go on rejoicing.

Paul cares more about Christ being made known than about his own reputation or vindication. He could have nursed his grievance; instead he lifts his eyes above it to the one thing that matters most. His joy does not depend on others treating him well but on Christ being preached. This is a freedom worth coveting, a heart so centered on the Lord that it can rejoice even when others act against it, because the name of Christ is going forward.
