What Does Philippians 1:2 Mean?
This greeting opens nearly every letter Paul wrote. Grace was a familiar Greek salutation and peace the ancient Hebrew blessing, and Paul joins them, filling both with new meaning by naming their source: God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ together.
Grace comes first because everything begins with God reaching toward us before we reach toward him, and peace follows because a heart that has received grace can finally rest. Paul does not wish these on the Philippians as a vague hope but traces them to a definite origin, the Father and the Son named side by side. The order matters for daily life: we do not work to earn God's favor and then find peace, but receive his favor and discover that peace grows from it.
