What Does Philippians 1:4 Mean?
Joy is the keynote of this letter, sounded again and again even though Paul writes as a prisoner. Here it surfaces in his praying: when he brings the Philippians before God, he does so gladly.
Prayer for others is often dutiful, sometimes anxious. Paul's is joyful, because he sees God already at work in them and trusts him to finish what he has begun. Notice the words always, every, and all: his love is wide and steady, leaving no one out. Such joyful intercession is a gift we can give those we love, lifting them up not with worry but with confidence that the God who hears is good, and rejoicing simply that they belong to him.
