In contrast to the false teachers, Titus is to teach what is fitting for healthy, sound doctrine.

What Does Titus 2:1 Mean?

With a sharp but, Paul turns Titus from the deceivers just described to his own positive task. Titus is to speak the things that suit sound doctrine, teaching that produces spiritual health. What follows in the chapter will spell out what such teaching looks like in the daily lives of various groups in the church.

Sound doctrine is not abstract; Paul immediately connects it to conduct. Healthy teaching forms healthy living, household by household and age by age. For the reader, this sets the agenda for the chapter and corrects a common assumption. Good doctrine is not opposed to practical instruction but flows directly into it. What we believe about God in Christ is meant to shape how we behave, and faithful teaching never stops at ideas but reaches all the way into ordinary life.
