What Does Zephaniah 1:5 Mean?
Two groups are singled out. First, those who climb to their rooftops to worship the host of heaven, bowing to sun, moon, and stars. Second, and more subtly, those who swear by the LORD and also swear by Malcham, a pagan deity. This second group is the more dangerous because it looks devout while hedging its loyalty.
Divided worship is not worship at all. To keep the LORD's name on the lips while bowing the heart elsewhere is to serve no one fully. God seeks those who will worship Him in spirit and in truth, with a heart that is whole. Jesus pressed this same point: no one can serve two masters. The call here is to let go of the secret idol we hold in reserve and give God the undivided trust He alone deserves.
