What Does Zephaniah 2:13 Mean?
Judgment turns last to the north, to Assyria, the superpower whose capital Nineveh inspired terror across the ancient world. God will stretch out His hand against it and make Nineveh a desolation, dry as a wilderness. The mightiest empire of the age is named for ruin as easily as the smallest neighbor.
Nineveh had once repented at Jonah's preaching, but pride and cruelty had returned. Now its fall is announced with quiet certainty. The lesson is plain: no empire is too great to fall under the judgment of God. The strength that made nations tremble counts for nothing before the LORD. This humbles every human power and comforts every oppressed people. The kingdoms of this world rise and fall at God's word, while His kingdom alone endures forever.
In the Original Language
tsiyyah (צִיָּה), 'dry' -- parched, waterless desert ground, an image of a once-great city reduced to barren waste.
