What Does Zephaniah 2:8 Mean?
Judgment now turns east to Moab and Ammon, neighbors descended from Lot. God says He has heard their reproach and reviling, the way they mocked His people and magnified themselves against Israel's border. These were taunts spoken in pride, and behind them lay greedy designs on the land.
God hears. The scorn heaped on His people did not vanish into the air; it reached the ears of the LORD. There is deep comfort in knowing that the insults the faithful endure are not forgotten by God. He takes the reproach of His people personally, as an offense against Himself. Those who mock and trample the humble will answer to the One who hears all. And the people of God, when reviled, can entrust themselves to the One who judges justly, as Christ did.
In the Original Language
cherpah (חֶרְפָּה), 'reproach' -- scorn, taunt, or disgrace heaped on another, here the mockery Moab and Ammon directed at God's people.
