In contrast to the corrupt city, the just LORD dwells within it, faithfully bringing justice to light each morning.

What Does Zephaniah 3:5 Mean?

Against the backdrop of corrupt princes, prophets, and priests, one figure stands out in shining contrast: the just LORD is in the midst of the city. He will do no iniquity. Every morning, as faithfully as the dawn, He brings His judgment to light and never fails. Yet the unjust, confronted by such steady righteousness, feel no shame at all.

What a comfort that in the midst of a corrupt city, God Himself remains just. When human institutions fail, His righteousness does not. He brings justice to light morning by morning, as constant as sunrise, never wearying and never failing. The tragedy is the hardened heart that can stand before such purity and feel no shame. This verse invites the reader to let the light of God's faithfulness expose and soften the conscience, rather than harden against it, and to find in His unfailing justice a sure and steadying hope.

In the Original Language

tsaddiq (צַדִּיק), 'just' -- righteous, in the right, doing what is upright, here describing the LORD who dwells among a people who are not.
